Making Cover Art

So I figured I'd try to help people out and offer some advice on some aspects of writing as a career, since I've technically been doing it for a few years now. (With, uh, varying amounts of success.)

Let's start with cover art, because as much as people FUCKING LOVE to say, "Don't judge a book by its cover!", they do. Pretty much everyone does.

However, I do want to emphasize that the real foundation of your career as a writer is the writing itself. You need a solid core, a firm foundation of quality writing with which to build on. Otherwise you probably won't get anywhere.

(Not trying to come off as sound liking some elitist bitch. I don't think I'm great at writing or anything, I just try my best and hope people like it, and practice pretty much every day.)

So, cover art.

First thing's first, you need to determine whether or not you have an eye for visual art. This is...admittedly hard to determine. I'd recommend just trying to make some covers and see where you land. Either you're abysmal and come to realize it's going to take a LOT more practice and research, or you might not be half-bad at it, or you're a natural.

From there, you should determine whether or not you want to put in the work. I can understand why you might not want to. It's the exact reason why, as soon as I got some money, I began working with someone to help me. Cause I suck at making cover art.

If you are looking to go it alone, here's some resources.

PIXABAY. This place is nice. It's basically just a massive collection of royalty free images you can use. I'd recommend getting an account, just so that you can download the biggest versions of pictures. It's no-bullshit, no hassle as far as I can tell. I haven't had any kind of trouble and I've had an account for awhile now. Go looking through this for images that you might want to use for your cover art. There's a ton of stuff on here, but most of it isn't amazing. There are some hidden gems though. Basically, try typing in a lot of different phrases if you're looking for something specific, because different words can bring up totally different results.

SHUTTERSTOCK. It's kinda like the pro version of Pixabay, in that it costs money. The images aren't super expensive. Individually, anyway. The pain in the ass is that you can't just buy one image. You have to buy, like, credits or something, in packs, and then use those credits to buy pictures. It isn't really a scam or anything, as far as I can tell. Once you jump through the extra hoops, you can buy the images without a problem. It's just a psychological trick they use to try and get you to spend more money. The bigger the amount of money you spend, the cheaper the individual pics are. They REALLY want you to sign up for a monthly subscription. If you want to buy just like a few pictures, it's fucking expensive. If you're invested in making covers for yourself, and you produce a lot of content, this is probably worth investing it.

GIMP. Sounds kinky, right? It's actually not. Basically, this is a free, open-source photo editing program. It is...complex. Or maybe I'm just an idiot, but it took me awhile to get the hang of it, and even now I realize that I'm only utilizing maybe 15% of its total abilities. It has a LOT of things you can do to make pictures, but it will take a bit to figure out. If you're looking for a given effect, google it. There's probably a reasonable tutorial on how to do it. If you're serious about making cover art, this is worth investing time into.

There's a lot of other stuff out there, but this will get you started. Also, IMPORTANT NOTE! If you are writing erotica and are going to use someone's picture, like a model you got from one of those sites, don't use their face! Not unless you got it from a site that's specifically okay with using models for that purpose. I doubt there exist vast AIs or bots trawling the internet, looking for erotica that uses some people's faces on the cover art, but it's just not worth the hassle if it ever does come up. Some people get really touchy with this and it's basically their legal right, I believe, to say that you can't use their face on your sexual content. I mean, as far as I know. I'm just a cautious person out of nature, so I don't bother.

Now, some general advice on making cover art.

  • No Crowding. Try not to put too much stuff on your cover, specifically text. Really, the most we need is the title and the author's name, and perhaps a byline (basically one of those little taglines you see on the covers), or maybe (MAYBE) a piece of a glowing review, if you somehow managed to get someone with a big name to publicly review your book.
  • Eye-Catching. Try to make your cover have some kind of central image or maybe a good color scheme to make it eye-catching. Something that snags your attention the second it enters your field of vision. Obviously different things attract different people, and this is more of an art than a science. Honestly though, like a lot of cleavage works well, I've heard.
  • Centered Text. It is your friend and it looks pro. Center your name, center the title. Unless you've got a stylistic reason to do otherwise, which plenty of people do. But it's gotta look good otherwise.
  • Series/Brand Recognition. If you're going to do a series of stories, they all have to resemble each other, to let the reader know that it's part of a series. Or, if you're going really big, it's part of a brand. Your brand. This can be super hard. For a long time I used pink silhouettes and I...have no idea if that worked or not. But I do know that not a lot of other people were using silhouettes, so hopefully it gave me a bit of good branding. Maybe go with a very specific font, (oh yeah, check out 1001fonts for some cool fonts, but make sure they're free to use and not licensed, or you'll get in trouble, but if you find one you really like, you can place it right into GIMP.) Or maybe create a little logo that you put on every cover.
  • Thumbnail. Whatever you make, it has to look good as a thumbnail. You know how the covers are small when you're browsing in the Amazon store? Basically that. It should still look good and be recognizable and legible at that size.

Now, what about if you don't want to make your own cover art?

Well, luckily there's some places you can go to get relatively cheap cover art made if you're strapped for cash.

First thing you'll need is a paypal account. Pretty much everyone operates on them and they aren't too much of a hassle.

I used fiverr for awhile. I recommend signing up and then go hunting for top-rated people making cover art. You'll be able to at least get decent cover art for cheap, either 5$ or 10$ usually. I used this person for a long time. She charges 10$ a pop now but if you aren't getting a crapload of works like I used to (I needed about 9 per month), then you should be fine. She's fast and reliable and pretty good at what she does.

Now, I found the two people that I currently now work with through the website artistsnclients. This is basically a site that hooks you up with people who draw, if that's what you're looking for.

You might also want to check out deviantart. I admittedly don't really know about about it, but some cursory research led me to believe that some artists might be open for commission. Find something that you like and maybe PM the artist and ask if they'd be willing to let you use it, or maybe to commission them to create something like it.

ADVICE: If you are going to go to someone to create a drawing or something in-depth, I'd recommend being up front about the fact that you are going to use this as cover art. Tell them this right from the outset, because I think it's fair to let them know whether this is something for your personal collection or something that's going to be part of a commercial endeavor.

There's certain a hell of a lot more to making cover art and even having cover art created for you, but I think this about covers the basics.

Hopefully this helps someone.

Changes & Plans

So, a lot's been happening.

Right now, I'm still gathering my thoughts. I feel like I'm picking the pieces back up, and walking on thin ice, waiting for something else to go horrifically wrong. But I'm going to continue forward with the tentative hope that the worst of it is over.

I want to recap a little, to make sure everyone is up to speed. I'll give a rough sequence of events.

After a massive boost in success thanks to luck and me releasing new, longer content with new cover art, and seeing more success in a few weeks than I have in my entire career, Amazon fucked me over and threatened to terminate my account when they falsely accused me of attempting to manipulate the Kindle Unlimited via page reads. I defended myself to the best of my ability, letting them know that not only did I not do that, I would never do that, nor do I even know how. In the process of this, every eBook I've ever written was removed from the store. I did manage to get them all back after a few fucking DAYS.

An in-depth post about this whole sorry thing can be read here.

Realizing that I can no longer trust Amazon, and that all of this seems to be tied to page reads in the Kindle Unlimited, I began trying to pull out of the KU. In an attempt to protect myself, I took down every individual episodic title that was in the KU, instead of waiting for them to fall out naturally, as I can't just pull out. Luckily, after I asked to be pulled out, Amazon agreed and took all of my titles out of the KU. You can read about that in detail here and here.

Now, I have decided to keep almost all of my episodic stories, and individual collections, (not including the Complete Seasons and Trilogies), unpublished, on the grounds that I will be re-publishing these stories in a cheaper and better format over the next year or so, and I would rather people have access to the better versions than the inferior versions. However, if people really, really want them, I've left up the Complete Seasons & Trilogies.

I would also like to point out that as I get close to re-releasing these titles, I will take down the old versions ahead of time. This is why Royal Lust (formerly Royal Love) is no longer available, as it is coming out June 1st.

Some of you may have noticed that Valkyries and Alien Harem have disappeared from the Kindle Store. There is a reason for this. Basically, as I think about my re-releases, some things occur to me, and here's something important that I realized.

I'm not very satisfied with most of my content. The reason for this is because...well, honestly, I guess a few different reasons. My own failings as a writer to be sure, but also because I just wasn't sure what I was doing for most of it. And, to compound the situation, writing in episodic shorts honestly does fuck with my ability to tell a good story. Or at least a story to my own satisfaction.

And this has shown up a few times in the form of, for example, Valkyries. I wrote that as almost kind of like a good version of Hellcats. Or my upcoming Parasexual. It's basically a better version of Paranormal Passions.

Because I have gotten better at writing, (I mean, I hope), and because I can write novels now, I'm really feeling the urge to redo a few of my older works, as I had much higher hopes for them, and knew they could be more than what they ended up being.

Alien Harem and Valkyries are the two I intend to do full on rewrites of. I think Alien Harem could at least be a solid trilogy, maybe even a bit more, but I think Valkyries could be a full on series. And I have more I want to say with Valkyries and I think it could be a really awesome series.

Now, in terms of what I'm doing right now.

I'm working on Demoness III. Definitely not as far in as I'd like to be, and as everything finishes settling, (I also have some unrelated real-life stuff going on right now, nothing bad, just distracting), I'm looking forward to settling in and making good progress on this just about every single day until it's done! And from the layout I've created, and how comfortable I'm getting writing novels, I think this one might actually be longer than Demoness II!

Basically the same story for Parasexual. Once everything settles, I'll make daily progress on it, too. This one will likely be about as long as Hellcats, so it shouldn't take as long to write.

The other thing I'm working on in the background right now is preparing my re-releases for, well, re-release. There typically isn't a great deal of work that goes into this, but there's enough that it warrants some preparation.

This is as far as I'm going to go on my in-progress projects. Well, writing-wise, at least. I don't want to spread myself too thin. Two projects at once is enough.

Now, as for what I plan on doing after that?

I've given it some thought, and I've decided that I will not be working on Haven after Parasexual. Instead, I will continue on with Parasexual until it is finished. This stems from not wanting to have too many series in progress at once. Three is enough. (And that's excluding the re-releases.)

That being said, I've received an unexpectedly large and positive response to Women of the Wild, and as such, once Demoness III is complete, I will begin production of Women of the Wild II. After that, I have a solid idea of what I want to do for Demoness IV, and will write that, followed by Women of the Wild III.

Once Demoness IV wraps up, I'll need to assess the situation. The thing is, I have ideas, to be sure, for several more Demoness books. But I have other ideas that I really want to get to, and I also don't want to work on a series too much, or I'll burn myself, and probably the readers, out. So there's a good chance that I'll put Demoness on the back burner.

While I will continue to work on Women of the Wild, as I have pretty solid ideas of what I want to do for Parts III, IV, & V, I'll have to decide what series to start up next. There's a very good chance that I'll finally begin my Sci-Fi Action Erotica series Wild Discovery.

Once Parasexual is wrapped up, I'll probably begin working on my rewrite of Alien Harem.

For the foreseeable future, this is how it will go. I'll have three series actively in production, with two of them being larger and more 'serious', with one of them being shorter and more focused on erotica and sex. And by shorter I mean 40,000 - 50,000 words, (Hellcats was 50,000 words for reference).

That's the gist of it.

I do, however, have one more big thing I want to talk about. My Patreon.

I've recently given it a revamp and a few things are different. One is a massive difference.

So, first of all, if you donate 1$/month, you will get access to the first chapters of my works in progress. 5$/month gets you access to the nude alternate versions of my covers and the first chapters.

I've added a new tier. For 10$/month, you will get access to all my books. This will come in the form of two downloadables: a kindle-ready file and a PDF, or you could just read it right there on Patreon. I'm planning on launching this in June and will do a full blog post explaining it. I also want to say that not everything will be available right away, mainly because of the Kindle Unlimited. Although I am technically pulled out of the KU, any of my books that have been borrowed by people will stay in their libraries until they naturally expire. So because Amazon has made me SUPER paranoid, I'm going to refrain from posting Hellcats, Demoness, or Women of the Wild related content until they naturally expire. Sorry, but I really just want to avoid any potential bullshit from Amazon.

Here's what I intend to have ready to go on launch: Royal Lust, Wanderlust, My Undead Lover, & Exploration. I will upload titles before their official release dates. Eventually, the Hellcats Trilogy, Women of the Wild, Demoness I & II, and The Misty Vixen Starter Pack will be available. I'm not going to put up my free titles (Snakeskin, Pink, Blind Date, The Pale Redhead, Large & Lovely), because they're freely available in all formats already.

I honestly have no idea if anyone will be interested in this, but I figure it couldn't hurt to experiment and give it a shot.

With how the past week or so has gone, I really feel like I need a backup plan or two in terms of being able to pay my bills and buy food.

So yeah, that's everything! Hope this was useful. Thanks for reading!

Hellcats: The Complete Trilogy Released!

Hellcats - The Complete Trilogy is out now!

You can purchase it as an eBook for 9.99$ right HERE.

You can purchase it as a paperback for 14.99$ right HERE.

If you're asking yourself about the need for a collection of the Hellcats  books, I'll try to clarify why this exists as much as I can. First and foremost, there is no difference between Hellcats 1, 2, & 3 in their original forms, and how they are collected in this book. However, there is bonus content available only in this collected trilogy. They are three short stories that take place after the end of Hellcats 3. Official descriptions are below. Now, to be clear, if you are a long-time fan, I want to say that these three shorts were included in Quickies: Hellcats, (which is now no longer available). So consider that if you're thinking about buying this.

The main reason this exists is for hardcore fans who really feel the urge to collect every scrap of content someone writes, or for those who want another way of helping support me.

Whatever reason you may choose to buy this, thank you. And if you aren't interested, that's fine. I completely understand. I've been writing bonus content for three years now, and I've always tried very hard to ride the line between offering content that makes purchasing collections worth it, but not writing content that is integral to the story, and would piss off readers who would miss out on it because they don't want to, or can't afford to, purchase this collection.

I hope I've done a good job.

Here is the official synopsis:

Welcome to the complete collected trilogy of Hellcats, a harem sci-fi erotica.

In a futuristic society where humanity lives alongside a half-dozen other alien races in relative peace, romantic or even casual relationships between the species are still a taboo for most races. Especially humanity.

Ryan is a young technician with a lot of expertise, but not much real life experience. Looking to break out of his simple life, he suddenly signs on with a group of mercenaries called the Hellcats. And when he learns that the crew of beautiful alien or otherwise inhuman women intend to use him for more than just his technical skills, everything changes forever...

This collection includes HELLCATS, HELLCATS 2, & HELLCATS 3, as well as three bonus short stories that take place after the end of Hellcats 3.

THE SWAP, in which Ryan and Syl decide to do some experimenting and swap partners with another couple.

STILL TALL, STILL SEXY, in which Emily pays Ryan a visit and has some fun.

THE SWAP - PART 2, in which Ryan and Syl hook up with a mature married woman looking for an interracial threesome.

THE HELLCATS TRILOGY contains casual sex between a human and a host of alien or otherwise inhuman ladies, and definitely features a lot of passionate sex scenes. You have been warned.

I've Successfully Pulled Out of the Kindle Unlimited - What's Next?

Right now, it's about 8AM. This whole thing has really fucked up my sleep schedule and given me some bad anxiety-related insomnia.

So. I was trying to sleep, couldn't, and checked my e-mail again for the hundredth time. My heart jerked pretty hard when I saw a new e-mail from Amazon. This is what I got.

Hello,

I’ve cancelled your KDP Select enrollment on your behalf.

Customers who have already borrowed your book can still read it until it's finished, returned, or their Kindle Unlimited subscription expires. As a result, you may see new Kindle Edition Normalized Pages (KENP) read appear in your reports until then.

See the KDP Select Enrollment Help page for more information:

Thanks for using Amazon KDP.

Amazon.com

So...yay?

I still feel like I'm under threat, because all the KU page reads I've gotten so far could still trigger their bot or algorithm or AI or whatever the fuck it is that's seeking 'illegitimate borrow activity' with a fucking vengeance.

So I still feel like I'm living with a fucking shotgun aimed at my forehead.

I've checked, and all my remaining titles that were in the KU are now not. I'm honestly hoping that this will be enough to get me out of harm's way.

But, what comes next? Because obviously this has all been a pretty huge upset for my plans.

Well, my brain's still spinning, but I've got a few things I know for sure, and a few thoughts.

#1) I am for sure going to forge ahead with publishing my re-releases, although I've had a few thoughts on that. Namely, I think I'm going to hold some of them back, because upon further reflection, I've realized that I might actually want to just do a full rewrite of them. Not many of them, just a few. We'll see about that. These will continue to be released at 2.99$ in eBook, and 9.99$ in paperback.

#2) I am for sure going to press on with Demoness III and Parasexual. I will try to get these written and released by June, but given all that has happened and how little I've got written over the past week, I'm not sure I can promise this. But I will be working very hard on these two titles, they will be my primary focus.

#3) Now that I am not longer beholden to Amazon's exclusivity, I am planning on releasing my titles through Smashwords as well, which will then distribute them to a good number of other platforms, chief among them the Nook, and Kobo. Unfortunately, since I have less control over the formatting there, I can't promise they'll look as good as they do on Amazon, and am really just hoping that the cover and writing make purchases through other platforms worth it.

#4) I've gotten messages from a few people lamenting my pulling out of the Kindle Unlimited, as they are fans of my work, but cannot afford to buy all or even most of my books, which I completely understand. This has led me to start thinking about producing my own subscription based service. Essentially, what I'm thinking right now is that I'll create a new tier for my Patreon. For 10$/month, you'll get access to all of my books. I don't know how many people would be interested in that, but it would at least be a good experiment, I think.

Those are my main thoughts right now.

At this point, I just want to keep my head down, steer clear of any further false accusations, and just, you know, write. And be able to make people happy and make a living off of that.

That'd be great.

Yep, More Updates

Hellcats 2.png

In case you missed it on Twitter, there is the official Hellcats 2 cover!

That's Syl, in case you're curious. And yes, you will be able to see her naked at some point in the near future. Either if you're signed up to my Patreon, or if you wait until I eventually release it to the site.

Spoiler: She looks good naked.

Now, for a few updates. There aren't a great deal, as I've been busy yet again with a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff. So I'll get the important information out of the way.

Hellcats 2 is still on track for a May 1st release. I'm going to stop updating my blogspot with posts, though I will update it with new links and covers whenever I release something new. Because I don't really like to leave messes behind, I'm probably going to get rid of it and focus all my efforts on this website sometime this year. Speaking of which, I gave the website an update! I hope it looks better now. I'll also be releasing nudes to my Patreon on a somewhat more regular basis. Still working out some kind of schedule.

That's basically all the important news there really is. If you want, you can leave now. If you want to, you can stick around and listen to me complain about busywork.

As for what I've been doing for the past week...

I've been dealing with problems.

The first big problem was that I realized I actually didn't like an aspect of the new covers I made. Which meant that I had to remake almost ALL 200+ of them. I had given them a dark border, which I ended up not liking, at least not on the sides. I also realized that I actually really didn't like the font I'd settled on for my Post Apocalyptic stuff, so I found a new one.

Another cover-related thing that really jumped out at me was that I'd reused certain silhouettes too often on the Complete Seasons or Trilogies. This cropped up when I took a look at my Amazon page and saw a lot of them stacked together. I've done the best I could because honestly, there's not like a massive surplus of quality silhouettes that I can easily access. I had to make due with what I've found. I'm so glad that I can finally update to hand-drawn stuff. It looks a million times better.

I also found out that I missed updating a few covers randomly, so they stick out like a sore thumb, and I apparently forgot to update the paperback version of Royal Lust. Actually update, I CAN'T update the book to Royal Lust, at least not accurately, because once you set the title of the book, it is LOCKED forever. So that sucks. I retitled it recently to Royal Lust because that is way more accurate. (Not sure what I was thinking back then.) But it's a bit of a moot point since I'm re-releasing it as a stand-alone novel June 1st!

I also tried to customize some more of the silhouettes. I changed the head-branches on Wanderlust #9, which is about a dryad. I added in another elf girl on Wanderlust #5, stuff like that.

Then there's the text documents. I had to update ALL of the links in the back to reflect that I have published Hellcats and Women of the Wild. This used to be a simpler process, but now I have to feed each file through a formatting program, so it's even more time-consuming.

And, on top of that, I had to straight-up redo all the Paranormal Passion ones because I realized that I had accidentally used the same font as all of my Fantasy stuff for the titles, so I had to give them all a new font.

On top of that, I ended up creating over a dozen brand new pages on the site, deciding to make my four universes a bit more accessible, giving each series it's own page and banner. I hope they look cool.

And I went through and posted all the new, updated covers to the blogspot as well.

I also created a new banner for Twitter and my site! I can finally use new drawn characters! I plan on adding to and then switching out characters as more get created.

That's about it. It's times like this that I kind of wish I had...ANY kind of help, so that I don't have to derail the writing for a solid four-five days to deal with this massive build-up of work. But it's just me, sitting in front of a computer for hours on end. I mean, now I have a pair of very talented women helping me by drawing the covers, but otherwise it's all me doing the writing, editing, formatting, publishing, and all the other odds and ends that go with that. And that's probably how it will be for a long time.

But whatever. May will be a relatively quiet month, seeing Hellcats 2 & 3, and Hellcats: The Complete Trilogy. June is when things will start to heat up. I'm going to use this quiet period to get some serious writing done on Demoness III and Parasexual, and seeing if I can plan out another book for Alien Harem that takes place in between the two Seasons.

Wish me luck!

New Release Schedule

So, I've revised my release schedule again. Hopefully for the LAST time, at least when it comes to very large revisions.

The past few days have told me something and provided ample proof to a theory I had been tentatively fostering for a long time: If I write and release longer titles, they will sell better.

And that has happened.

Now, this isn't necessarily life-changing money. I haven't won the lottery or anything. But, well, if things keep going the way they are now, I can at least stop bitching about bills.

So what's different?

Well, basically, for the rest of the year, I plan on having three tiers of releases.

TIER ONE: Old school re-releases. This began with Hellcats, which is now a #1 Bestseller, so apparently there is still a market out there for my older content. I will be re-releasing an older collection twice a month. On the 1st, and on the 15th. And whenever one gets wrapped up, I'll be releasing a Complete Trilogy or a Complete Collection, with some extra content in there, for 9.99$ in eBook format, and 14.99$ in paperback. The Complete Trilogy/Collection will come out two days following the release of the final title in that particular trilogy/series. Example: Hellcats 3 will launch on May 15, so Hellcats - The Complete Trilogy will launch on May 17.

TIER TWO: Parasexual & Haven. These two get their own particular tier because I don't want to cop out on content I've already promised. I was going to release these as episodic short stories, but with how well Demoness and Hellcats are suddenly doing, it's made me reconsider. So I'm just going to release them as novels! Right now, I plan on Parasexual being a four-novel series, and Haven being a trilogy. But if they prove popular enough and if there's enough demand for it, that could extend. I plan on releasing one of these per month, starting with Parasexual on June 10, then Haven on July 10, and so on and so forth.

TIER THREE: My longer novels. Primarily the DEMONESS series right now, since people seemed to react well to it. Due to the nature of writing the longer form stuff, by which I mean Demoness II got away from me and took longer than I thought it would, I can't nail down a completely accurate timetable, but I am going to shoot for a new novel every two months. As it stands right now, I've got pretty solid ideas for DEMONESS III, IV, & V, with a whole world of possibilities after Part V, so I think I'll end it there temporarily and move on to something else. I honestly want to get to Wild Discovery, cause I also really like writing Sci-Fi Erotica, but if Women of the Wild proves to be really popular, I might take some time and pen a few more of those.

I'm going to be fucking busy.

Eventually Tier One will run out, since it has a hard limit: Sex & Survival. That's the last of the titles to be re-released. At my current rate of two titles per month, Sex & Survival 3 should go up sometime in Mid-2019. So...quite a ways off!

Now, Tier Two should theoretically run out by the end of 2018, but there's a few possibilities of extending it. As I mentioned before, Parasexual or Haven might get a few extra sequels if the people really want it, since the way I tell stories is kind of flexible. There's also the possibility of continuing some of my series that I've already considered wrapped up, as not all of them necessarily came to an end. I pretty much leave all my stories open-ended, because of the way I write, but with several of them, I feel like I've said enough. Wanderlust, for example. I can't imagine continuing that with where it ended. Same with Hellcats. It has a pretty solid ending, I think. But some of the others, maybe not so much. I mean, if I got a good enough idea, I could do another Desire. And there's definitely more that could be done with Sex & Survival. I mainly brought that to an end because no one seemed interested in it anymore, but who knows?

Eventually, Tiers One and Two will run out, and will leave me open for nothing but Tier Three. When this happens, I hope to be able to basically just funnel all my time and efforts into writing longer erotica titles, one at a time, and faster. It's my eventual goal to be able to get about one novel out per month.

So...yeah. Get ready for more longer erotica!

Women of the Wild Released!

The first novel in the Women of the Wild series is here!

You can purchase it as an eBook for 3.99$ right HERE!

You can purchase it as a paperback for 9.99$ right HERE!

Here is the official synopsis:

A novel of fantasy adventure and human-on-dryad lust.

Seth Baker has fantasized for years about leaving his little village, getting out from beneath his parent's overbearing influence, and living his life for himself. And the day has finally come when fantasy can become reality. He's trained, he's prepared, he's scrounged together enough gold to buy the bare basics necessary to survive the dangerous world of monsters and magic that lies beyond the walls of his simple village. (At least he hopes so.)

But Seth isn't delusion about his chances of survival, or how hard it's going to be to live out there in the wilderness, traveling between towns and trying to make it with his chosen profession of a traveling herbalist, providing rare and unique potions. So he's decided to test himself: he will travel to the Redwood Forest, one of the largest woodlands in the land, and gather five unique plants in order to make a rare potion.

While he expected to run into dangerous situations, into difficulties and hardships, into monsters and giant spiders, Seth did not at all expect to run into a beautiful dryad woman named Rain, who takes an immediate and intimate interest in him...

Popular Erotica?

I don't really know how to approach this, because I'm not a particularly subtle or nuanced person. I certainly can't approach it from the point of view of anything resembling social justice, because this thing I'm going to talk about is at least somewhat motivated by my own personal frustrations at getting left behind and overlooked in the erotica market.

Right now, I'm in the middle of updating my entire backlist with new cover art and formatting, in the hopes of appearing a bit more put-together and possibly drawing in additional readers. For the most part, I try not to just fire and forget my stories. Unfortunately, I have over 200 titles, (almost all of them short or collections), so it's taking, like, fucking forever.

But sometimes I peruse the best sellers, or even just check out titles I see in the also bought section of my own works.

I shouldn't. It's a bad idea because it's just depressing. It seems like pretty much everyone else is doing better than me.

What's starting to really get to me though is that it seems like erotica that goes out of its way to intentionally objectify women is selling off the shelves. It's always hitting the top charts. Now...I don't really want to swerve into 'moral high ground' territory, partially because I do write erotica where one guy fucks a lot of women and it pretty much always turns into a harem situation, and partially because I understand the difference between fantasy and reality, and I think pretty much everyone has fucked up fantasies, and that's fine.

So I'm not here to shame people or advocate tearing these stories down or anything. I actually just want to co-exist.

It's just that...when I check out the 1 and 2 star reviews, they almost always say the same things: The women are flat, one-dimensional, useless characters who exist only to be fucked and satisfy the male lead. I mean, that's a pretty common complaint.

To be clear, I don't think I'm an amazing writer, or that I have great characters, but I do at least intentionally try to inject certain things into my writing. Namely, I try to give the female characters some depth, with their own motivations and problems that don't revolve around getting fucked by the main character. Nor do the women rely entirely on him. I try to mix it up, but I frequently feature strong female protagonists and side characters. I try not to make it overt, because I know how easily that gets subverted into other things. I also try to work in themes like consent and respect and trust and communication. Again, I try not to make it overbearing, more just work it into the narrative.

As the author, I don't know how well I do, but no one's really complained so far, so that's something at least.

But I guess what got me really thinking on this was this title called Alpha Online. I don't want to link to it because clearly it has enough exposure and maybe that's just being petty but I'm honestly in a shit mood right now because it's been a really fucking stressful year so far.

Anyway, it's got all the sort of cliched, annoying things I've spent a long time trying to avoid in the description, with the bold-faced words about SEXY, SUBMISSIVE WOMEN just waiting to be DOMINATED BY A TRUE ALPHA. Like, come on, am I the only one who finds that just laughably lame? And I'm not even ripping on the author. I mean, I find this shit in like lots of top-selling erotica. Who are all these people that don't find this blatant, in-your-fucking-face marketing a total turn off?

I guess what I'm really digging at here is...where are all these people who lament how blatantly stupid and pandering erotica writing and marketing has gotten? I mean, I get it, I know that erotica is mainly here as fantasy fulfillment and to get you off. And that's fine. But this is just getting ridiculous.

Where are these people who apparently hate shallow, one-dimension characters and pandering wish-fulfillment fantasies? They apparently have bought a lot of this stuff that they hate, because they're frequently leaving reviews complaining about how much they hate them. So what's preventing them from following that thought train through to the end and seeking out erotica that has more positive views on strong female characters and consent and happy, trusting relationships? Those don't seem to be hitting any of the bestseller rankings.

Like I said, I'm not completely sure how to go about this, and I'm not really trying to tear down anyone else. I just wish me and authors like me would stop getting passed over when we are apparently trying to service an aspect of the market that is being sorely asked for, and yet the askers are just ignoring us.

It's almost like there's an abusive relationship theme in there.

Should I just give up? I don't just 'write whatever sells'. I try to find a happy balance between writing what I want to (and can) write and what people want to read. There's some stuff I won't write because I suck at it and some stuff I'm not so sure about writing because I feel like it would clash with the themes I've been cultivating for over three years now with my works.

But should I just compromise on that? I need to pay my bills, I'm not even asking to be rich or mega successful. I guess I'm just wondering if I should start writing about A HAREM OF HOT SLUTS just begging for TOTAL DOMINATION by a REAL MAN.

Shit, I don't know.

Hellcats Re-Released!

HELLCATS is officially out!

You can purchase it as an eBook for 2.99$ right HERE.

You can purchase it as a paperback for 9.99$ right HERE.

Here is the official synopsis:

A Sci-Fi Harem Erotica featuring beautiful, badass mercenary ladies!

Emily is a seven foot killing machine. Genetically engineered and designed for combat by the military, and then later discharged when they grew tired of her and her kind, the Amazonians, she ended up forming her own mercenary team and drifting across a galaxy where over half a dozen different species live in relative harmony. Although she's fairly successful when it comes to making money, she finds herself in a frustrating situation: it's hard to get laid when you're a seven foot killing machine. The other mercenaries she shares her ship with, all of them aliens, all of them women, have their own similar situations. In a fit of frustration, she decides to deal with this problem by hiring on a cute young human who she figures won't mind being passed around like a sex toy by the crew...

Ryan is twenty years old and afraid that he's settled into the rest of his life already. He's prudent, responsible, has a good job and no debts. Although he isn't adventurous by nature, in a fit of spontaneity he decides to sign on with a crew of mercenaries, as he figures his skills as a technician would be useful to those who live on a space ship, and it's a way to see the galaxy. And apparently luck was on his side in a way it never has been before: he signed on with Emily and the Hellcats, a group of attractive, tough, mostly alien mercenaries who, he quickly learns, are interested in more than just his technical skill, and plan on having him perform maintenance on them rather than the ship...

HELLCATS is a novel of casual sex between a human and a host of alien or otherwise inhuman ladies, and definitely features a lot of passionate sex scenes. You have been warned.

Now, the big question, which part of Hellcats does this cover and what's new besides the cover and formatting? Well...not much, admittedly, with this first novel.

This covers episodes 1 - 6, and the bonus shorts from Collections 1 & 2, and a little bit of Episode 7. Basically, it ends with the ladies deciding it's time to take a vacation.

As for what's new? There's about 5,000 new words worth of content. Basically, a few extra scenes with Emily, and a new section with Ryan, Emily, and Love doing a job together, and then all three of them having sex.

If you're interested in picking up a copy, that'd be much appreciated! And for once, I'm actually going to mention reviews. For the most part, I've avoided talking about them, because getting reviews on the shorter works, while appreciated, I don't think have helped too much. Since they just aren't taken seriously by the community at large, especially short erotica. But something like a novel has a bit more weight to it, so reviews would both still be very appreciated, and really helpful.

Thanks!

I'm working on Hellcats 2 right now, which will actually have a lot of new content. (Mainly sex!)

Hope you enjoy!

Demoness II Release & Other Updates

First and foremost, Demoness II is finally freaking out!

You can purchase it as an eBook for 4.99$ HERE.

You can also purchase it as a paperback for 9.99$ HERE.

It feels good to finally get this book out! It's just over TWICE the length of the original Demoness. As for what it's about, well, here's the synopsis:

John Greenfield's life has changed forever.

After finding a wounded, unconscious demoness while out hunting one morning, he saved her life and learned much about her. Her name is Yelena and she is from another realm of existence. As they got to know each other, something that first grew out of intense passion and lust has transformed into something more: a powerful and deepening love.

Now, both have decided to cast off their former lives in search of a life together. But this will be difficult. As a demoness, Yelena is hated and reviled without thought by most of the people who occupy the land, and John along with her as a demon-lover. If they're going to do this, they will need something special, unique, and very rare: an amulet that will hide Yelena's true nature from the local populace.

But in order to get this, they will have to travel into the Emerald Wild, the most dangerous forest in the land, in order to earn enough coin to purchase such an artifact. The time has come to explore the untamed wilderness and each other...

CONTENT WARNING: This title contains adult situations, sex scenes, an interracial and open relationship, and a lot of hot human on inhuman action. You have been warned.

So have at it!

Also, the paperback version of Demoness is out now! It's 7.99$. You can get it HERE.

Now, the time has come to get to updates. There are a LOT of them. I've covered some of this in previous updates, but not everything. Basically, a LOT is going on right now in terms of what I'm planning on doing with my writing and ideas keep coming to me and getting reorganized and that's why there's so many update blog posts. I'm trying to kind of keep it all organized in my head and for the fans.

So with that, here we go!

Now, because I kind of ramble a bit, I'm going to post a straightforward, bullet-point list here now. If you like having more information, keep reading below that.

  • I am updating almost ALL of my titles with new cover art that I designed and better formatting.
  • This is resulting and will result in free titles not being free for a little while.
  • I will be re-releasing Hellcats, Wanderlust, Alien Harem, and The Royal Trilogy (retitled Royal Lust) as novels. This will take some time, as I need to do some rewriting and brand new writing in some cases. These will be getting brand new covers featuring some hand-drawn art!
  • I also intend to, eventually, replace almost all of my cover art with covers featuring hand-drawn characters.
  • I'm going to try and get Amazon to push out an e-mail to allow people to get updated versions of some of my titles. (Demoness, My Undead Lover, Exploration, Misty Vixen Starter Pack.)
  • I'm going to update my website and my blogger, especially my blogger, as I figure I should probably keep it around for awhile longer.
  • Hellcats will be out April 11th!
  • I've decided to finally release Women of the Wild #1, since it's done and I'm just sitting on it. First chapter will be up on Patreon very soon and it is slated for release April 18th in eBook, Kindle Unlimited, and paperback!
  • Nude versions of Demoness II, Exploration, and Hellcats will be coming to Patreon soon, with more to follow in the future.
  • I will be turning Exploration and My Undead Lover into trilogies. These will be non-exclusive and will be available through Smashwords, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, etc.
  • Starting sometime this month, I will begin posting PARASEXUAL, and once that first season is wrapped up, I'll begin writing HAVEN. And then bounce back and forth, releasing an episode roughly every four days.
  • A few round-up random things: I'm going to be taking down the Quickies in June, making Large & Lovely free, I'm going to be posting most of the stories in Quickies to the site as free shorts for the fans, and try to write a few new ones. I'm debating about whether or not to publish these for the fans shorts or just leave them on the site as basic freebies. I'm also going to try and find some time to start doing some fan fiction. It's either going to be Mass Effect or Dragon Age, based on the poll. Not sure yet.

Now for some expanded intel.

Right now, I'm in the process of updating almost all of my older titles with new cover art, all of which is designed by me, (for better or for worse...), new formatting, and updated back matter. (Basically just the links to my other books and social media in the back.) This is taking like...a long time. I'm trying to power through it. So that's what's happening right now.

Small Side Note: As a result of updating older titles, stories that are supposed to be free are kicked back to costing money. It should be a simple process of getting them back to being free.

Once that's wrapped up, my next big kind of background project will be converting Hellcats, Wanderlust, Alien Harem, and The Royal Trilogy (retitled to Royal Lust), into novels. Hellcats and Alien Harem will be trilogies, although they will end at the same place as they have before, there will be a fair amount of new content in both of these. The same can be said for Wanderlust, which will have four novels. Royal Lust will basically be the same, so if you don't feel like buying it, you won't be missing out on anything. As soon as all those are up, I'm going to take a break before moving on to future titles.

I'm in the process of getting some characters from the older works drawn (clothed for the covers and nude for fun extras!) to serve as cover art for the re-releases.

Some of my titles that I'm updating will, hopefully, be given the option to re-download updated versions of them. I have to ask Amazon to do this. Basically, if they say yes, they'll send out an e-mail to everyone who owns the book and you'll get the new version. New versions will include any edits I've made since initial publication, a brand new cover, updated formatting, and a table of contents! These titles will include: Exploration, My Undead Lover, The Misty Vixen Starter Pack, & Demoness.

I've decided to keep my blogspot around and I'm going to TRY to give it a makeover. I want drop-down menus! Unfortunately, they don't have a built-in way to do this, so I'll need to fuck around with HTML to try and make it work. We'll see how this comes out. But I'm also going to do a bit of reorganizing on this site here because I had a few new ideas.

Hellcats is ready to go. I'm going to release it April 11th as an eBook, in the Kindle Unlimited, and as paperback! The eBook will be 2.99$, the paperback 9.99$.

Some of you may know that I finished writing a novel last year. It is the first in a long-running series that's almost like a novel series re-imagining of Wanderlust. It's called Women of the Wild. It features a dryad as the main female lead. Since it's written, edited, and basically ready to go, I suddenly kind of realized that I need to stop worrying so much about releasing stuff in order. So I'm just going to release it! It's coming out on April 18th as an eBook for 3.99$, also available on the Kindle Unlimited, and as a paperback for 9.99$.

I'm finally going to be updating my Patreon with actual content! The first chapter of Women of the Wild will be coming very soon and nude versions of the covers of Demoness II, Hellcats, and Exploration will be coming soon! I'm hoping to make this more regular. The nude pics will then come out one month after they are released on Patreon.

I'm going to be writing sequels to Exploration and My Undead Lover, turning them into trilogies. They'll all be available on Smashwords, Barnes & Nobles, Kobo, etc. There will also be a Complete Trilogy collection with a bonus short.

While all this is going on, my primary focus will be producing two brand new episodic series. The first, PARASEXUAL, is set in the Paranormal Erotica universe. I'm aiming for it to be four seasons. The second, HAVEN, is set in the Post Apocalyptic Erotica universe, and will be three seasons.

Quickies are coming down in June. I'm going to be posting most of the stories in it here to the website as basic freebies. I'm still debating as to whether or not I will be publishing any what I call 'for the fans' to the Kindle or Smashwords or anywhere beyond the website for a few reasons: they have some required reading to be fully enjoyed since they feature already established characters and rely on already established lore, and I'm also not too sure how interested people actually are in reading them, and writing/editing/formatting free shorts does take time away from writing other more official stuff. The final reason is that, for some reason, writing these shorts is actually hard for some reason, and not in any kind of good way. For whatever reason, the shorter the form, the harder it seems to get. Despite all this, I will be trying to get some more for the fans free shorts out featuring other characters.

I'm also kicking around a few ideas for other free shorts that can serve as entry points into my shared universes. I got a potentially good one just recently that takes place on Desire, so who knows? Maybe other cool ideas will show up.

Going to try and start getting to work on an erotic fan fiction soon. It's going to be either Mass Effect or Dragon Age, based off of the poll, which had them tied. Not sure which one it will be yet, but I've got at least a rough idea of what I want the stories to be for both of them.

And the last thing I can think of is that at some point, whenever I get a new cover drawn for Large & Lovely, I'm going to make it free.

So...yeah. A shitload of stuff going on behind the scenes right now!

I wanted to thank everyone who reads and reviews and shares and comments, basically everyone who is a fan and helps in any way. I really appreciate it! You all are a big help.

Be on the lookout for more updates and releases!

Welcome!

Welcome to my website!

My name is Misty Vixen, and I write erotica. If you want a bit more detail, check out my About Me page, but the gist of it is that I write stories about regular human dudes banging hot inhuman women, including aliens and monsters and paranormal entities.

This site serves as a central hub for me and my content, including helpful links to everything I've written, opinion pieces on erotica and sex in general, and updates on my projects.

Considering I already have a welcome page to the site, I'll keep this short.

I hope you have fun reading about all the hot sex I write about!
